“When patients are treated using manual therapies, it also changes the behaviour of their cells”. The lecturer of the Degree in International Physiotherapy, Anna Prats, highlights the importance of biology in the profession of physiotherapist

The Degree in English of International Physiotherapy from the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies InteractivesENTI-UB) and the School of Health and Sport (Escola Universitària de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES-UdG) is committed to holistic training, addressing the different aspects of physiotherapy and working with the new technologies of e-health and health 2.0. On this occasion, we will focus on the course subject of Biology, taught by the lecturer, Anna Prats Puig. This is a subject that can initially seem not to be directly related to the daily work of the physiotherapist, however in fact it is, and to an important extent, since it is essential in carrying out the work of the profession properly.

The lecturer Anna Prats has a PhD in Biological Sciences and teaches classes at the University of Girona, as well as at the University of Barcelona. In addition she is a researcher at the Girona Institute of Biomedical Research. In the field of research her interests include child obesity and its development. It should be noted that she has participated in 23 international research articles, as well as in 9 international congresses and in 7 national ones; in which she has gained several awards. It should also be noted that she has been awarded two research grants, one at the CNRS in Montpellier (France) and another at the University of Cambridge (UK).

As Dr Prats points out, the aim of the Biology course that she teaches in the Degree in International Physiotherapy is to learn the functioning of the cells, their main parts and how they change and adapt to nerve contraction situations so that we can survive.

Regarding the application of her subject in the daily life of a physiotherapist, Dr Prats insists that it has a direct connection, since when patients area treated using manual therapy, what the therapist is doing is changing their conditions or their muscle strength. Thus he or she is also changing the behaviour of their cells. In this sense, Dr Prats points out that if physiotherapists comes to understand how this works, they will be able to carry out the work of their profession better and will have more success.

Lastly, according to Anna Prats, the main advantages of studying the Degree in International Physiotherapy at the Campus of the UB are first of all: having the opportunity to study in English, a highly important aspect for the students’ future. Also important is the fact that students can get to know people from all over the world and establish international networking. As a final positive aspect, Dr Prats stresses the opportunity that the students have to become familiar with new technologies, an aspect that she values as important, since they need to be prepared for the new ICT of the future.
