The teaching staff for the Degree in International Physiotherapy: real experts with an extensive devotion to scientific research

The teaching staff for the Degree In International Physiotherapy, from the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – ENTI-UB), and the School of Health and Sport (Escola de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES-UdG), combine lecturing and research. At the Campus of the UB you will have the opportunity to train with an expert teaching staff, most of whom have PhDs and specialise in their field, with extensive academic skills in research (classified publications, research impact, etc.). In addition to their devotion to research, the lecturers for this degree are characterised by their broad teaching skills, their international origin and their extensive experience in both professional and academic areas.

Thus the lecturers for the Degree in International in Physiotherapy are characterised by their dual profile: that of academic-researchers and that of active professionals. Focusing on the area of research, we would like to highlight the three scientific studies published recently by three lecturers in this degree: Araceli Muñoz, Javier Jerez and Joaquim Chaler.

‘Discourses on the Toxic Effects of Internal Chemical Contamination in Catalonia, Spain)’ Is the study published by Dr Muñoz, member of the Medical Anthropology Research Centre of Rovira i Virgili University, which provides an in-depth examination of one of her usual fields of research: that of health, risk and internal contamination. The aim of the publication is to show that human exposure to the toxic components of the environment and to pollution merits greater attention. In this review, an assessment is made of internal chemical contamination and the risk of toxic effects as an experience related to the activity of everyday life.

In contrast, ‘Dynamics of activities of daily living performance in institutionalized older adults: A two-year longitudinal study’ is the study published by Javier Jérez, holder of a PhD in Public Health. On this occasion, he focuses on the impact that functional decline, maintenance and functional improvement can have on the basic activities of daily life (BADL) in the elderly, while at the same time also discussing the evolution of their functional capacity. The study, focusing on the Latin America area, was carried out over two years, with assessments every 6 months, on residents in 10 homes for the elderly. It evaluated activities such as eating, personal hygiene, bathing, moving about and walking using a 5 point Likert scale.

Lastly, we should also highlight the study by the lecturer Joaquin Chaler, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, entitled: ‘Standard and Short RoM Isokinetic Testing: Comparative Analysis in Identifying Submaximal Shoulder External Rotator Effort’which focuses on a parameter that marks the difference between eccentric-concentric strength ratios at two distinct test speeds (DEC), based on a 60° (standard) range of motion (RoM), which has been proven to be highly efficient in detecting simulated muscle efforts.

In the Degree in International Physiotherapy from EUSES-UdG and ENTI-UB research is, without a doubt, one of the most important areas. Choose innovation and quality, by studying at the Campus of the UB.
