“My students learn very practical skills.” Claire Knott, a lecturer in the Degree in International Physiotherapy, stresses the real application of her subjects in daily clinical practice

The lecturer Claire Knott, an Australian physiotherapist and specialist in medical emergencies (paramedics), has extensive experience as a physiotherapy professional in the hospital sector, both private and public: private consultations, community care, locum services, services for the elderly and the field of sports. She considers herself a person with a genuine passion for emergency medicine, fitness and wellness. She is currently a member of the teaching staff of the Degree in International Physiotherapy at the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – ENTI-UB) and the University School of Health and Sport (Escola Universitària de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES-UdG), where she teaches the subjects of Assessment in Physiotherapy, Fundamentals of Physiotherapy, Basic Healthcare and Kinesiotherapy.

As a member of the teaching staff, Claire Knott is committed to an eminently practical approach to her subjects; constantly striving to help her students achieve highly pragmatic skills with a real application. Such as, for example: Assessment in physiotherapy, a subject in the 1st year of this Degree in which students learn to assess the functional state of the patient or user, from the perspective of physiotherapy, by considering their physical, psychological and social aspects. Thus they identify normal and altered structures by means of palpation and using specific tests for diagnosing skeletal muscle injuries, among others. Without doubt, this material deals with one of the most important aspects of physiotherapy, because if they are not assessed correctly, it is impossible to decide upon or apply the appropriate treatment correctly. For this reason, Knott strives to ensure that her students achieve these essential concepts during the first years of this degree.

In addition to this course, Knott also teaches Fundamentals of Physiotherapy (1st), where students put into practice the tools for appropriate development of practical and theoretical skills within the framework of passive joint mobilisation; Basic Health Care (2nd), which deals with the provision of basic care in health emergencies, the protocols to follow, how to act in the event of an emergency…, and Kinesiotherapy (2nd), during which students learn specific treatment techniques, such as the analytical stretching, propioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, etc.

Lastly, Claire Knott stresses the main advantage of the Degree in International Physiotherapy, the fact of studying entirely in English in a non-English-speaking country. In her opinion, this provides young students who wish to travel and study at the same time with a good opportunity. In short, during this degree, students establish international networking and have the opportunity to train in a big city like Barcelona. Therefore everything is highly dynamic, very new and exciting.
