‘Learning the basics of physics improves the way physiotherapists carry out their profession’. The lecturer Bertram Müller explains his experience as a member of the teaching staff in the Degree in International Physiotherapy

The lecturer Bertram Müller forms a part of the teaching staff of the Degree in International Physiotherapy from the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – ENTI-UB) and the University School of Health and Sport (Escola Universitària de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES-UdG). Of particular interest with regard to his academic profile is that he was trained in biomechanics, a multidisciplinary branch of science that incorporates know-how from mechanics, engineering and medicine. He also has extensive international experience in countries such as Scotland and Germany.

In the first year of the Degree in International Physiotherapy, Bertram Müller will teach Physics in lectures which will cover aspects such as the mechanics of solids, of fluids and of electromagnetic fields as a basis for the functioning of, for example: the muscle-skeletal system and of the use of therapeutic agents in physiotherapy. According to Müller, there are many ways of teaching physics. However, according to him, the most important thing is that students learn how to apply it in everyday life, especially in the field of physiotherapy. In this sense, Müller always attempts to demonstrate the applications of physics in a practical way.

As for the usefulness of this subject for future physiotherapists, Müller points out that learning the basics of this material is essential in his professional practice. He also adds that physics is very important because it implicitly includes concepts such as heat, cold, motion, forces, etc. And all of these are the basis for many of the applications in physiotherapy. Therefore, according to Müller, the better the uses of physics are known, the better they can be applied, and in this way help us to be better physiotherapists.

In short, this Degree involves a holistic and transversal training that includes subjects specific to the field of physiotherapy and other fields in order to offer you a complete and high-quality training. Lastly, among the advantages of studying this university degree, Müller emphasises the fact that studying is entirely in English, a highly international language, the knowledge of which is essential; the internationality of the students, something which aids networking in technological subjects, and last of all, the application of the latest technological advances in the field of physiotherapy.
