During the Degree in International Physiotherapy from the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – ENTI-UB) and the School of Health and Sport (Escola Universitària de la Salut i l’Esport (EUSES-UdG) you will learn to apply new technologies to healthcare, and you will learn the different aspects of physiotherapy, from the assessment, diagnosis, design and development of treatments, studying entirely in English, a language the command of which is not only a necessity in today’s society, but a core skill for understanding scientific production, acquiring an optimal professional level and, ultimately, broadening your networking and employment opportunities. In addition, you will train with a team of lecturers highly qualified for teaching and linked to the professional world. What are the main characteristics of the teaching staff?
First of all, it should be noted its dual profile: that of academic-researcher and that of active professional. Most of the lecturers have PhDs and are specialised; they come from prestigious foreign universities and have a great vocation for university teaching, as well as extensive experience in both the academic and professional field. Their ongoing link with the day-to-day reality of the profession, allows them to keep the contents and methodologies they employ constantly up to date.
Notable among the teaching staff of the Degree in International Physiotherapy include professionals of the stature of: Mariano Gacto, Director of this Degree served professionally as a Physiotherapist in the Spanish and French Public Healthcare Services for six years. He has also participated in various international congresses and forms a part of the committee of experts for journals specialising in the field of Public Health (JCR). Also of note is the lecturer Dr Silvia Xargay, a graduate in Biology and with a PhD in Biomedicine “cum laude”, who is currently carrying out post-doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge and collaborating on several national and international projects.
Other members of the teaching staff contributing their experience and global vision to these studies include: Claire Knott, an Australian lecturer with extensive professional experience as a physiotherapist in both public and private hospitals; Andrea Fuente reputed instructor of the Pilates method, in charge of implementing the educational programme entitled Pilates conCiencia that offers specialised seminars both in Spain and abroad, and Anna Prats, Ph.D. in biological sciences, who has participated in 23 international research articles and several conferences, nine of them international and seven national, where she has received several awards. In addition, she has completed two research fellowships, one at the CNRS in Montpellier (France) and the other at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
In this same line, the following lecturers stand out: Francesc Xavier Prat, a graduate in psychology, has participated in a research visit to the University of Cranfield (United Kingdom) and is the author of several studies, published in international journals; Rocío Díaz, a dermatologist, who was awarded a scholarship to visit the XLAB laboratory for young students in Göttingem (Lower Saxony), accompanied by the Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Erwin Neher; also noteworthy is the lecturer Joaquin Chaler, a doctor specialising in physical medicine and rehabilitation, who has participated in 25 research papers at a national and international level, and who has also attended as a speaker in more than 30 conferences specialising in health, as well as being chief editor of the journal Isokinetics & Exercise Science.
Other great professionals are: Lucy Hackney, graduate in psychology and sociology at the University of Leicester, with extensive experience as a physiotherapist in the British public health system and also in the private sphere; Javier Jerez, wih a PhD in public health from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Natal, Brazil), also with extensive experience in the public and private health system, and Samuel Young, with a degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Melbourne, specialising in the area of musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy. He has extensive professional experience, having worked in several regional hospitals in Western Australia; he provided primary care to aboriginal communities in Northern Australia and has also worked as a physiotherapist at several clinics and sports clubs in Melbourne, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
This academic year will also include lecturers such as: Araceli Muñoz, doing a PhD in Social Anthropology and researcher at the Food Observatory (Observatori de l’Alimentació – ODELA) and member of the Centre for Research into Medical Anthropology. Her three main fields of work are: health and infancy, a field in which she carried out her doctoral thesis; health, risk and internal contamination and lastly, the support tools for quality research into social sciences . Also of note is the lecturer Bertram Müller, a biomechanic by training, with extensive international experience in countries such as Scotland and Germany.
Lastly, we should also mention the lecturers: Zoe Queally and Marta González. Queally is a specialist in spinal column and sports injuries, combining osteopathy, neurokinetic therapy (NKT), the technique of Be-Activated muscular activation, acupuncture, massages and Pilates for treating her patients. She also has extensive experience in various clinics and hospitals in London. As for González, she has a PhD in Biochemistry and molecular Biology, it should be noted that she has worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Behavioral Neurobiology Research Group (Grup de Recerca en Neurobiologia del Comportament – GReNeC). Her research interests include neurobiology, disorders of the state of mind induced by pain and addiction to drugs. She has published 7 research studies.
