In the Degree in International Physiotherapy from EUSES-UdG and ENTI-UB research work is one of the most important branches. Our teaching team combines teaching and research. The lecturer Javier Jerez Roig is an example.
He carried out a study entitled “Dynamics of activities of daily living performance in institutionalized older adults: A two-year longitudinal study.” The aim of the study was to observe the impact that functional decline, functional maintenance and functional improvement had on the basic activities of daily life (BADL) of the institutionalised elderly, as well as analysing the evolution of functional performance.
The study, focusing on the Latin America area, was carried out over two years and in five waves, with reviews every 6 months, on residents in 10 nursing homes. It evaluated activities such as eating, personal hygiene, bathing, tranferring and walking using a 5-points Likert scale.
Half of the 280 adults who participated in the study underwent functional decline and less than 15% improved their functional performance. The activity of eating suffered the most pronounced decline, followed by mobility and activities involving personal care.
