The syllabus for the Degree in International Physiotherapy is committed to innovation and specialisation, thereby adapting itself to the demands of today’s jobs market

The Degree in International Physiotherapy from the School of New Interactive Technologies (Escola de Noves Tecnologies Interactives – ENTI-UB) and the School of Health and Sport (Escola de la Salut i l’Esport – EUSES-UdG) focuses on a training that is holistic and specialised in the different aspects of physiotherapy, such as: the assessment, diagnosis, design and development of treatments, while studying entirely in English and with a clearly global vocation. In addition, in order to respond to the demands and requirements of today’s society, the syllabus for this course introduces the new ICTs, pertaining to e-health, applied to physiotherapy.

As for the syllabus, it should be noted that this university degree is structured into four years focusing on specific modules of knowledge. During the 1st year, in the Anatomo-physiological module, as its name suggests, you will attend the course subjects of Anatomy and Physiology. In Anatomy I, you will learn to identify and understand the anatomical structures for the purpose of establishing dynamic relationships with their functional organisation and its application in physiotherapy. You will thus learn the general aspects of the human body and the effects of practising physical exercise on muscular-skeletal structures, among other aspects. In contrast, Anatomy II focuses on more specific aspects such as the Anatomy of the nervous system, the endocrine system, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system and the immune system, etc. Following this in the same module, in Physiology you will learn about the functioning of the human body and the interrelationship between the different organs.

In the basic sciences module you will study Biology, focusing on the study of the cell as a basic unit that makes up living beings; Biochemistry place the focus on the structure and main functions of bio-molecules, and Physics, during which the mechanics of solids, fluids and electromagnetic fields are formally described as the basis of the functioning of the muscular-skeletal system. In the first year you will also study scientific English in order to use the English language at the level of academic excellence, as well as Fundamentals of physiotherapy, which will provide you with the tools for the proper development of practical and theoretical skills within the framework of passive joint mobilisation. Lastly, in Assessment in Physiotherapy, you will be capable of assessing the functional state of the patient or user, from the perspective of physiotherapy, by considering their physical, psychological and social aspects.

In the second year, you will be able to study the following modules: Social Sciences, General procedures in physiotherapy, Biomechanics, Kinesiotherapy, Specific methods of intervention in physiotherapy I, and Medical-surgical conditions I. In Social Sciences you will study course subjects such as Psychology, during which you will receive a technical and practical training in certain psychological and social aspects involved in the field of physiotherapy and Anthropology, in which the analysis of the cultural causes and the conflicts that affect health, its imbalance and the social impact that its significance has, are proposed from a holistic and ethical perspective.

Included in General procedures in physiotherapy are: Massotherapy, where you will learn the various techniques and specific methods of physiotherapy actions and its application in the different pathologies and for maintaining health, as well as Application of Physical agents, during which you will acquire the basic skills for applying Physical Agents in Physiotherapy. In addition, in order to gain a better understanding of how they are applied, you will work on various concepts and scientific principles.

In addition, you will also study technical subjects such as Development of Technical Studies and Biomechanics, also known as the Anatomy of Movement, which deals with the physical principles of Mechanics applied to the musculoskeletal and functional system of human beings. Without leaving aside other interesting subjects such as: Kinesiotherapy and treatment-specific techniques, incorporating the concept of neurodynamics and the application of its basic techniques.

In Specific methods of intervention in physiotherapy I, you will study: Care of Physical injuries of the Locomotor system, dealing with the approach and treatment of physiotherapy in the patient affected by injuries to the locomotor system; in Manual therapy you will learn the basics of osteopathic treatment from a physiotherapeutic perspective and Muscle Chains, during which you will discover the body elements that allow us to keep our balance and adopt a certain posture.

In the second year block entitled Medical-surgical conditions I you will study course subjects focusing on the care of patients, such as: Medical-Surgical conditions, where you will discover the main diseases, syndromes, and pains and their relation to musculoskeletal pain; Traumatology pathology, focusing on diseases of the locomotor system, studying its aetiology, diagnosis and treatment; and Basic health care, which deals with the knowledge of the person in the context of health, as well as implementation and basic care in health emergencies.

In the final years, 3 and 4, the emphasis shifts to specialisation. In the third year, with the modules dealing with: Physiotherapy in clinical specialties, Specific methods of intervention in physiotherapy II, Legislation, public health and health administration, Research methodology in physiotherapy, Medical-surgical conditions II and Work experience I, you will have a sound theoretical and practical basis that will help you navigate your professional future.

Lastly, in the fourth year, you will complete your academic curriculum, choosing from several elective subjects: Orthotics and Prosthetics, Postural and Movement Re-education, Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy App programming for mobile devices, Introduction to diagnostic imaging in physiotherapy, among many others. As well as the Work experience II and the End of studies project.

Make a commitment to a training that responds to the challenges of the sector, by studying the Degree in International Physiotherapy at the Campus of the UB.
